Why is Music Needed in Schools?

Music allows students to develop skills needed by the 21st Century workforce such as critical and analytical thinking, creative problem solving, teamwork, effective communication, and more while providing students with the opportunity to develop a higher level of self-confidence.

Studies have shown that music students achieve better results in other academic subjects like math, reading, science, etc.

Students of lower socioeconomic status who took music lessons in grades 8-12 increased their math scores significantly as compared to non-music students. But just as important, reading, history, geography and even social skills soared by 40%.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR MUSIC IN SAN LEANDRO SCHOOLS?

Fortunately three (3) years ago San Leandro's Board of Education approved a 5-Year Visual & Performing Arts Education Plan that will help restore some of the programs that have been lost over the years and will provide better equity in the programs being offered at all the school sites. However, once again due to a lack of funding the plan has not been able to be implemented yet.

There is some light at the end of the tunnel as the school district is receiving some new one-time block grant and on-going funds from the state that will be used to help start implementing the districts Arts Education Plan.

Even with the new dedicated funds we are still falling far short of what is needed for our music programs and that is where Keep Music Rockin' Foundation comes into the picture.

With your help and support and coming together as a community, we can make a difference for our students by providing funds to help restore programs, continue purchasing new musical equipment, supplies, etc. for our students which will help enrich and enhance their learning experiences.

So please join us in our efforts by becoming a Musical Partner with the foundation, by supporting our activities, and by making a tax deductible donation to the foundation.

Together we can keep the music rockin' in our schools!
